via FSC press release   MOUNT OLIVE, NC – Marina Jozoko and Emily Santoli combined for 11 goals as Florida Southern College women’s lacrosse exploded on offense in a 25-14 rout of Mount Olive on Friday afternoon at the Ray McDonald Complex. The No. 1 Moccasins (12-0) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first five minutes of action and never looked back as they cruised to an easy win over the Trojans (9-3) for their 27th-straight regular-season win. The 25-goal performance marked the sixth time this season that the Mocs have scored at least 20 goals in a game, and is the second-highest single-game total in school history. Florida Southern fell just one goal shy of tying the school record for goals in a game, set during a 26-6 win over Catawba on April 1, 2012. HOW IT HAPPENED • The Moccasins got off to another fast start by scoring five times in the first five minutes of play. Jozokos put the Mocs on the board first when she took a pass from Shannon Mazza and found the back of the net just one minute into play. Jozokos would strike again 33 seconds later on a feed from Meghan O’Brien, while Santoli, Shannon Gilfedder, and Riley Bannatyne would also get on the scoresheet in the early going to give Florida Southern a 5-0 lead with 24:54 to go in the first half. • The teams would trade goals over the next seven minutes to make it 7-3 with 17:34 on the clock. The Moccasins responded with four-straight goals, two by Santoli and one each from Ashley Norberg and Aubriana Benedetto to snag an eight-goal lead (11-3) at the 11:55 mark. A quick 3-1 scoring run by the Trojans cut the deficit to just six (12-6) with 6:20 remaining in the first period, but Julia Couch scored with 4:51 to go to make it 13-6. However, Mount Olive would snag momentum with three-straight goals to end the half and trim FSC’s lead to just four goals (13-9) at the break. • After swapping goals to make it 14-10 with 27:09 to go in the game, Bannatyne would score twice and Jozokos would tally yet another goal to push the advantage to 17-10 with just under 23 minutes on the clock. After Mount Olive ended the 3-0 run with a goal of its own to make it 17-11, the Moccasins put things out of reach with six-straight goals to go up 23-11 en route to the victory. • Santoli finished the game with six goals and an assist, while Jozokos scored five times. Bannatyne added four goals of her own, while Gilfedder had three and Benedetto tallied two. Couch, Gilfedder, and Meghan O’Brien each notched three assists, while Mazza and Casey O’Brien each had two. Florida Southern finished with a 41-24 edge in shots, won 26-of-39 draw controls, and snagged 28 ground balls to Mount Olive’s 19. INSIDE THE NUMBERS • Florida Southern extended its regular-season winning streak to 27 games in a row and improved to 3-0 all-time against Mount Olive. The Moccasins moved to 122-23 when ranked in the IWLCA Coaches Poll. • Santoli scored at least three goals for the fifth-straight game and has tallied at least three in eight of the 10 games in which she has played this year. Her 155 career goals are good for fourth in school history, and she is just one shy of tying Lorianne Hoover for third in the program record books. • The Mocs continued their propensity for quick starts, and have now outscored opponents 139-53 in the first half this year. Jozokos finished with multiple goals for the seventh time this season. Santoli finished with 10 draw controls, while Sam Keesey tallied 11. UP NEXT • Florida Southern will head to No. 9 Rollins on Wednesday for a crucial Sunshine State Conference matchup. The Mocs head to Embry-Riddle on April 7 before returning home to take on Saint Leo on April 10.
