LAKELAND – It took an extra six minutes of overtime and a few heart-stopping moments along the way, but No. 10 Florida Southern pulled off the upset over No. 7 Stonehill, 12-11, in the first of a doubleheader at Bryant Stadium. The Moccasins, who’s undefeated season came to an end two days prior to No. 3 Limestone, improve their record to 5-1 on the season while the Skyhawks fall to 1-2 with the loss. It’s the second all-time win for Florida Southern over Stonehill, the first coming last season by the score of 16-12. Just like it has in every game this season, junior Megan Asper (Parkton, Md.) scored the game’s first goal off a pass from fellow junior and captainCaitlin Chase (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) to give the Mocs an early 1-0 lead only for Stonehill to respond with a goal of their own a minute later to knot the game at one-all. Freshman Chloe Cabigas (Maitland, Fla.) and Chase scored two straight goals to inch the team ahead by two before the Skyhawks pull to within one. Chase and sophomore Meghan Colucci (Glocester, R.I.) put two in the back of the net to give the Mocs a big 5-2 lead halfway through the first half. Following a much-needed timeout, Stonehill stormed back with three straight goals from Brooke Rudden to tie the contest before Asper scored her second goal of the contest with one second to go to give the Moccasins a 6-5 going into the break, setting the game up for an epic finish. Chase started off the second half with her second score of the contest to give the Mocs a two-goal lead 6:38 into the half before Stonehill answered right back three minutes later to make it a one-goal game. Goals from Asper and sophomore Ashley Robertson (Ellicott City, Md.) gave the Mocs a three goal cushion with 14:01 remaining, but Stonehill drew the game even with three consecutive goals. The Mocs had one more chance with time expiring, but Robertson was stuffed by the Skyhawk goalie right on the crease with three seconds left in the half, sending the game into overtime. Back-to-back Asper goals and a score from Chase gave the Mocs a 12-9 lead at the end of the first overtime period, but the momentum swung in favor of the seventh-ranked Skyhawks, as they scored two goals in two minutes to pull to within one, threatening the game to go into a third overtime. Senior Katie Hammerer (California, Md.) and the Moccasin defense held strong and stymied any more Stonehill chances, holding the opposition off the scoreboard for the final minute and preserving the upset. Asper continues to have a high-scoring season, netting five goals and dishing out two assists for seven points in the contest, while Chase found the back of the net four times and also assisted twice for six points. On the defensive side of the field, freshman Marissa Clements (Eldersburg, Md.) forced a game-high five Stonehill turnovers, while freshman Parrisa Sakinejad (Millers, Md.) led with four ground balls. Hammerer made a season-high 15 saves in the overtime win, with 10 coming in the second half and one in each overtime period. Rudden, Kelsey Shannahan and Mikayla Couch each tied for the team lead with three goals for Stonehill, while Keri Gould led the team with two assists. Lizzie Lane pulled down five draw controls and four ground balls on the afternoon, while Ashley Armstrong made seven saves between the pipes in the loss for the Skyhawks. The Mocs conclude the doubleheader with a 7 p.m. tilt with Young Harris (1-8). Following the game against the Mountain Lions, Florida Southern hosts No. 15 Indiana (Pa.) on Tuesday, Mar. 18, at 7 p.m.
