Rollins scores the final four goals to come back for the win

GAFFNEY, S.C. (February 18, 2022) – The 12th-ranked Rollins men’s lacrosse team got the 2023 season started with a bang, upsetting ninth-ranked Limestone on the road on Saturday, 13-11. The win puts the Tars at 1-0 on the year, while the Saints drop to 3-1.

Grant Hansen tallied four goals and an assist, while Jack Johnstone registered three goals and two assists. Mikey Berkman recorded two goals, three assists, and three ground balls, and Justin White had two goals, two ground balls, and an assist. Shahe Katchadurian (1-0) was solid in goal, making 14 saves on 25 shots to get the win.

Zachary Terry posted three goals, two ground balls, and two caused turnovers for the Saints, while Carter Brand dished out five assists and picked up three ground balls. Cory Lyons (3-1) took the loss in goal, making nine saves on 22 shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter

  • After Limestone opened the scoring just over a minute into the game, Johnstone tied things up at the 7:12 mark.
  • Hansen scored his first just over a minute later to give Rollins its first lead.
  • The Saints got the next two goals to retake the lead, but Logan Myers scored with 1:16 on the clock to tie it at three.
  • Limestone netted the final goal of the period with 38 seconds to go, taking a 4-3 lead after a quarter.

Second Quarter

  • The Saints opened the scoring in the second, but Berkman and Hansen scored the only other goals of the quarter, evening the contest at 5-5 going to the break.

Third Quarter

  • Hansen’s third goal of the game put the Tars up 6-5 less than five minutes into the third.
  • After a Limestone goal, Hansen scored number four to regain the lead, 7-6.
  • The Saints once again tied it, but Johnstone and Harrison Key found the net late in the quarter to put Rollins in front, 9-7, heading to the final period.

Fourth Quarter

  • The fourth quarter proved to be a tale of two halves, with Limestone grabbing the momentum first, scoring four goals, two just six seconds apart, to grab an 11-9 lead with 8:55 to play.
  • White scored his first goal just 37 seconds after the Saints’ final goal, which sparked a 4-0 run for the Tars to answer back.
  • Johnstone’s tally at the 7:02 mark tied things up, and Berkman’s marker just 40 seconds after that put Rollins back in front.
  • White added an insurance goal at the 3:28 mark, and the Tars were able to hold on for the 13-11 win.

UP NEXT:
The Tars will continue their three-game South Carolina road trip next Friday, Feb. 24, when they face No. 15 Anderson at 7 p.m.
