FLN Weekly High School Media Poll (Well, This Writer Anyhow!) – 3/5/17

FHSAA, Florida Top Ten, Men's Lacrosse
Well, if you thought last week's results shook things up, this week was kind of an earthquake . . . Two teams just outside of the Top 20 last week made major statements. A perennial Top 10 program looks like it is spiraling out. David Bowie had a song about this . . .     The Southwest of Florida is starting to show again.  Two years ago I predicted a Barron Collier - Ponte Vedra final and that certainly didn't happen, and the Southwest was not competitive the last few years with the East coast. but now that is starting to swing a little, as BC's big 8-1 win over Belen Saturday indicated. Meanwhile, further up north in the Tampa area, Tampa Jesuit dealt a spanking to Maclay, as that team is probably wondering why it made a coaching change. Fo

5-Goal 4th Quarter Run Lifts Immokalee to 9-7 Road Win Over Calvary Christian Academy

Every time I cover a game at CCA another story seems to come out and last night was no different. Last year, at our FLN Senior All Star Game, my assistant coaches were Adam Bond of CCA and Scott Rickard of Immokalee and after getting to know each other they decided to schedule games and when I found out about it i promised them I would cover the game.  Unfortunately, Adam was rescheduled by the Academy for a retreat with his 6th grade class and he had to miss the game, depriving me of a picture with all three of us, the only undefeated coaching staff in Florida history . . . There were definitely compensating positives though. First, the reconstruction of the stadium is pretty much done and it looks terrific.  A full press box, seat back sections, etc.  Looks great! S

Three weeks into the season and this past week really shook things up . . . LOTS of big games that impacted the rankings. The type of week that makes it a little harder to come up with that really good song that i can use to introduce the week.   But then, using a particularly inspired piece of memory . . . A film that I saw in the movie theater in 1969. If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/If_It's_Tuesday,_This_Must_Be_Belgium   Ten games on Tuesday made an impact on the lacrosse scene. That's actually Michael Constantine in this scene, who recent movie goers recognize as Gus from the My Big Fat Greek Wedding Movies. A pretty funny scene as an American and a German who fought the battle in WWII at this...

You knew SA had this one circled on the calendar. As did a lot of local fans. And the Lax Sports Network. All because of last April.  And an amazing reversal of last year's regular season meeting. You knew it was going to be good. And it was.     It really was a simple game to analyze afterwards.  One team finished their opportunities and one didn't. The goalie play reversed last night too.  Last playoff Christian Tomei made 18 saves on 25 shots on goal.  Last night it was 6 for 16.  SA's tandem of Andrew Buzel and Nick Ferraro went 9 for 15. A poor clearing performance in the first half by Oxbridge. Sprinkle three posts in the 3rd quarter when OA looked like they might make a run, only to be followed by a three-goal run late in that

Okay, finally we have a pollster who actually SAW a couple of games! Damn, it's great to get out of the house! Viruses suck.   Four of the Top 7 in the Preseason Poll have already tasted defeat . . . and that does not include Oxbridge. For those who are new to this poll please understand that I do not rank the IMG National or Varsity programs as they are not eligible for FHSAA playoff consideration and I see them as a separate entity dedicated to developing a player and team that makes it an apples and oranges comparison to traditional high schools.  This is not a slight to them, it is just that they market themselves nationally, not at the Florida level.  Oxbridge did fall to IMG Varsity last week but those games play no role in my polling decisions.
