Great Experience at Summer Face Off

Great Experience at Summer Face Off

Originally, I planned on writing this article about how the Summer Face Off held in Orlando this past weekend was a great success.  I was going to tell you who won each division and thank all those involved for making the event possible. Maybe I would have dropped a few names of players that made great plays or coaches that showed great sportsmanship.  In short, I was going to write basically the exact same thing I do after every tournament I attend.  I'll still tell you all that, albeit a bit more briefly (if that's all you care about skip down to the bottom), but I decided it would be more worthwhile to share with you a great experience I had at the Summer Face Off at the end of the day on Sunday. I'm a lacrosse referee.  Between getting yelled at by adults that too often forget this

Players that Impressed at Team Florida Showcase

On Saturday, I had the pleasure of attending Team Florida's 2016 Summer College Showcase, where the top high school lacrosse players in the South had the opportunity to prove their worth to over fifty college coaches in attendance.  The experience not only helps these kids get recruited, it also allowed the boys to develop their skills by receiving instruction from the college coaches that lead each randomly assigned team. There were a total of 15 teams, 8 comprised of mostly graduation years 2017 through 2018 and 7 comprised of 2019's through 2021's.  I watched mostly the 2017/2018 teams and was able to see at least a half of each of these 8 teams' games.  There was so much talent and so many great players that I undoubtedly missed players that deserved to be on this list.  Still,

As always, Team Florida put on another great event for lacrosse here in Florida.  On May 7th and 8th, The Omni Resort in Orlando played host to the 2016 Team Florida Showcase.  In addition to the showcase, Team Florida also ran a youth academy for rising 3rd- 7th graders where they could get some of the best instruction in the state. I was glad to be able to spend all day Saturday at the event and see the top players in our state have the opportunity to put their talents on display in front of 55 college coaches.   (Stay tuned for my list of players that impressed!) Saturday was a beautifully sunny day with a nice cool breeze keeping it comfortable.  The natural grass was seemingly immaculate and all of the fields were located right next to each other making it easy for players,
Oak Hall Boys Win District 3

Oak Hall Boys Win District 3

The Buchholz Bobcats and Oak Hall Eagles have formed quite a rivalry in the recent years.  With the schools being less than five miles apart in the relatively small city of Gainesville, the kids know each other well and both teams have plenty of talent to make it interesting.  There is no love lost between these teams. This is the way the last three games between Oak Hall and Buchholz have gone...  2015 Regular Season: Buchholz wins 16-8 for their first ever win over the Eagles...  2015 District Championship: Oak Hall wins in overtime...  2016 Regular Season: Buchholz wins by one in a game that came down to the final possession.  Like I said, there is no love lost between theses teams. In 2016, just like last season, the Buchholz Bobcats took the regular season game only to fall in t

3/6/2016- By my count, today is the exact middle of the regular season for varsity lacrosse here in Florida.  For the occasion I decided to do my best Lee Roggenburg impression with a mid-season one-voter media poll. Hopefully, I don't regret it.  I welcome all complaints to twitter at @brosau96.  (Disclaimer: I'm not quite at Lee's level yet so no YouTube videos) To start off, lets take a look at last year's elite eight teams. Oak Hall is looking all right with only two losses on the season, both to quality opponents. Ponte Vedra is 8-2 with a win over a strong Olympia team. Timber Creek sits at 4-5 and looks like they just lost too much to graduation in recent years. Olympia only has one loss, which came at the hands of last year's state runner up in Ponte Vedra. Vero B

Florida’s leading research institute doesn’t only study concussions, Einstein’s theories, and other boring stuff, like beer.  They also study lacrosse! Dr. Heather Vincent of the UF Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation is the principal investigator for a series of studies based on the biomechanics of lacrosse.  The aspects of interest include the difference in motion as a player progresses from the high school level to college to the professional level and the difference in motion among different positions.  She is currently looking for more participants (more info on getting involved at the bottom of this article). A portion of this study was published in Lacrosse Magazine a little while back. You can be in the same study as Lyle and Miles Thompson! For the record, Vince

Benjamin Edges Oak Hall Behind Two 6-goal Performances

I had the pleasure of attending my first girls lacrosse game of 2016 on Friday when I watched Oak Hall host Benjamin.  I try to get to as many games as I can, but I am mostly limited to the Gainesville area (Go Gators!), so I was really excited when I saw this one on the schedule for Oak Hall. Of course, the big news around the state is that Vero Beach FINALLY lost an in-state game.  That's the first time it's happened since 2007!  Bishop Moore took down the Indians by a resounding final score of 14-6.  Does this mean we could have a new state champion on the girls' side for the first time in a decade?  I don't know, but, the presence of the thought is nice.  The 10 time state champions have elite talent and I have no doubt Coach Dean will have his players motivated for every single gam
