Barron Collier vs. Gulf Coast – Round Two.  The 1st game was close, but not until the end.  But just like a Boxing title fight from the 80’s….the 2nd match was always better.  This one played out as well.  The Cougars (17-1), Laxpower.com’s and FLN’s No. 2 ranked team in Florida, had never lost to their rivals a mere 8 miles to the North.  Gulf Coast (17-3), Laxpower.com’s and FLN’s No. 8 ranked team in the state, was 0-18 vs. the Cougars and desperately wanted to make a statement.  Both happened.  Barron won the playoff battle, 8-6 in a fiercely contested game and GC let everyone know that they were for real.
The play was fast and furious as the Cougars came out on fire and determined.  BC’s Drew Goodrich made a sweet face dodge and rip from 15 out to open the scoring.  He then connected upper 90 with time and space shot that froze goalie Nick Jardone. Shifty Michael O’Dea dodged from X to score and give the Cougars a quick 3-0 lead.  It felt like the 1st game again.  BC jumps out quick and controls the tempo.  Gulf Coast’s had only taken 3 shots on goal through the 1st 22 mins.  BC’s defense was frenetic and engaged.  No seams and quick slides.  GC was working for every inch they got.  With 2 mins left, GC’s “All Everything” Bo Garrison got a nice quick stick goal and GC took a 3-1 deficit into halftime.   HobdanMillerOdea   BC’s O’Dea owned the first two minutes of the second half with a 13 yard off hip rip and a finish off an ankle breaking roll dodge to give the Cougars a 5-1 lead.   But, there was no quit in this Sharks team.  Luke Hammock scored Gulf Coast’s second goal off a feed by Garrison at the 6 min mark of the 3rdThat’s when the flood gates let loose….the final 2 1/2 minutes of the quarter were frantic.   Gulf Coast’s Jordan Briggs began the scoring, and Andrew Elgin lit up the board again 44 seconds later.  Barron Collier’s Austin Miller answered the two goals with 49 seconds remaining in the quarter to give the Cougars a 6-4 lead. However, Gulf Coast’s Matt Shover regained momentum for the Sharks with a goal 11 seconds later.   6-5 heading into the final stanza.   Middie Omar Bishr scored from up to and O’dea tallied again to give the Cougars an 8-5 cushion.  This is where BC’s coaching was at its best.  BC’s Trent Carter and Ralph Quillen adjusted their game plan and you saw just how deep and versatile this team really is. Wave after wave of fresh Cougars hounded the Sharks relentlessly the whole quarter.  Bo Garrison found the net with 9 seconds remaining, but it was too late.  “Our defense is one of the top five in the state; it’s difficult to score on,” Carter said. “They do a heck of a job.”
Barron Collier advanced to a second-round play-in game against Sarasota-Cardinal Mooney at home on Friday.  BC handled Mooney 15-4 in the opening game of 2014 for both squads.
