It’s Tampa vs Florida Southern for First SSC Championship!

WINTER PARK, Fla. (Men’s Lacrosse) – The 2014 Inaugural Sunshine State Conference Men’s Lacrosse Championship Game is set. The No. 6 Tampa Spartans will host the No. 10 Florida Southern Moccasins on Saturday, April 26 at 1 p.m. at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Intramural Complex in Tampa.

The top-seeded Spartans (14-2) used a second-half surge to come back and beat fourth-seeded Rollins (6-9), 13-8, on Saturday in the SSC semifinal round. The Tars took a 6-4 halftime lead, but the Spartans outscored Rollins 9-2 in the second half. Tampa beat Rollins by the same score (13-8) during the regular season in Winter Park. Leading the way for the Spartans was Jake Rooney (Timber Creek) with four goals. Tampa’s Conor Whipple (St. Andrew’s) netted two goals and recorded four assists, and Kyle Hemrickscored twice and assisted on two more goals. Rollins’ Jack Vonarb scored a game-high five goals, including four of the Tars’ six first-half goals. Tampa’s Andrew Failla recorded 10 saves for the Spartans, while the Tars’ Andrew Sheerin made nine saves. In the other semifinal game on Saturday, second-seeded Florida Southern (11-3) dominated third-seeded Saint Leo (8-7) by a score of 18-7 thanks to a 10-goal (13 points) performance by Dane Sorensen. Sorensen scored nine of Florida Southern’s first 12 goals, including four-straight from the 3:33 mark of the second quarter to the 13:20 mark of the third quarter. The Moccasins’ Grant VanOverbeke netted four goals and record four assists to help Florida Southern to an 11-goal victory. Saint Leo’s Matt Obermeyer (Winter Springs) scored a hat trick for the Lions in the loss. Florida Southern’s Matt Lalli was tremendous in goal making 13 saves, including five in the fourth quarter. Saint Leo’s Dave Moore (Lake Mary) made nine saves. Florida Southern also defeated Saint Leo 11-10 in overtime in Saint Leo during the regular season. It will be the second meeting between the two nationally ranked teams this season when No. 6 Tampa and No. 10 Florida Southern meet for the first-ever conference tournament championship next Saturday. The Spartans hosted the Moccasins in their first conference game of the season—Florida Southern’s second conference game—back on March 13 where Tampa pulled out a 12-6 victory. The Spartans and Moccasins were tied 5-5 through the first half, but Tampa outscored Florida Southern 7-1 in the second half to win the first meeting by six goals.
