Ninth Annual Veterans Cup Wraps Up A Great Weekend

Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in .
Great weather and perfect field conditions greeted the players, parents, and coaches of more than seventy six teams who converged on Palm Coast for the 9th Annual Veteran’s Day Invitational.
Ponte Vedra Possums
The PV Possums were 5-1 on the weekend, losing only to Championship winner IMG
Nine years of experience putting on this event was put to good use as fourteen fields of continuous play stretching over three different venues went off on schedule and without a hitch.  Good competition, balls on the end lines, water on the benches, and well communicated game times, seedings, and schedules have become the hallmarks of Team Florida tournaments.  All of Florida’s NCAA programs were represented with several of our college coaches working the sidelines with some of their own clubs. In the U19 A division IMG Academy showed they have their program on track going 3-0 on day one.  Victories included a 12-2 win over the Jokers (Oviedo), a narrow 5-4 win against the Palm Beach Storm, and 7-1 against Braveheart. The host Ponte Vedra Possums also went undefeated on Saturday notching wins against the Pack of East Orlando 11-4, The Grizzlies of Bartram Trail 8-4, and the Melbourne Landsharks 8-6.
Girls 2013 Vets cup
Eight girls’ teams competed this year – Windermere’s Orange County Storm took away the Varsity Championship
IMG kept rolling on Sunday.  They were solid at both ends of the field as they took care of the Monarch of Creekside 9-1.  Elev 8 was able to get some offense going against IMG but not enough as they fell 14-12.  The IMG defense did it’s job as they played PV in the final, holding the possums to a single goal to take the championship game 8-1. The PV Possums came into the final having played two hard fought close games.  They topped Braveheart 4-3 and then got past the Storm 3-2. This year at the Veteran’s Cup Invitational eight girl’s teams competed for championships in a Varsity and Middle School Division.  It was Orange County Storm beating a very good Ponte Vedra Ice team by a 14-4 margin to take the Varsity division championship.  The North Carolina Flight was the class of the middle school field topping OC 8-7 for that championship. The Tampa Fire took the U19 B division with a 6-2 victory in the final over Talon Lacrosse.  It was a classic Ponte Vedra Possums vs. Braveheart final in the U 17 A division.  It was Ponte Vedra on top with a 5-2 win.  PV got past the Grizzlies and JLC to reach the finals after securing the top seed on Saturday.  Braveheart rolled past The Renegades and JM 31 after securing the number two seed on Saturday.
Elev 8
Elev 8 looked solid this weekend taking the #2 seed in their pool and making the semi finals
Elev 8 beat the Jax Dawgs by a score of 6-3 to win the ten-team deep U17 B division.  The Tampa Tarpons and Southern Express teams also showed very well in that group. The top seed Snipers beat the second seeded  Tampa Tarpons in the U15 group by an 8-2 margin.  The Barracudas beat the Snipers by a score of 4-1 to win the A division championship. Braveheart took the top seed and the championship in the U13 B division by beating a solid Tampa Tribe team 6-5 in the final. With ten teams competing for the U11 Championship it was a very competitive field.  The Swarm, Storm, Snipers, and Braveheart took the top four seeds at the end of play on Saturday.  Those four teams would end up filling the semi-final brackets as well.  The Storm got rolling against the Snipers winning 10-0.  The Swarm advanced with a 4-1 Victory over Braveheart. In the Final it was all Storm as they came away with a 7-4 Championship win. The U-9 Group consisted of Palm Coast, PV Possums, and Cuda Lax playing a round robin and it was quite evident that a great time was had by all of those youngsters.
